The tale of Dolly Madison rescuing the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington is well known because she wrote an account of it herself. Paul Jennings, a slave at Madison’s Montpelier plantation, also wrote a firsthand account. This painting of George Washington hangs in the White House today. Read the first hand accounts and follow the instructions on the project prompt to create a skit portraying the historical event and painting.
